Tunnels are invariably moist environments. MCU-Coatings are able to withstand the severe sulphur laden atmospheres encountered in road and rail tunnels and are able to protect the concrete and steel from exhaust deposits. They are dirty environments because they are not cleaned by wind and rain, so dirt and exhaust deposits tend to accumulate everywhere. It is therefore critically important that protective coatings are able to withstand this build-up of contaminants, whilst also being able to withstand industrial cleaning practices, maintain the coating sheen and ability to reflect light.
MCU-Coatings work in this environment because they:
- Are chemically resistant to sulphur laden atmospheres
- They are not flammable
- The one product suite is capable of bonding, sealing and protecting concrete and steel
- They can be applied on moist concrete, and in cold damp conditions
- The coatings dry quickly and can be recoated after 45 minutes
- They are perfect for night maintenance work (when traffic is low) because of their quick cure
- The coatings are easily cleaned, do not crack and are abrasion resistant
- It also helps that they readily withstand graffiti. If necessary they can be recoated with minimal surface preparation
As for the products themselves:
- It’s a single-component, 2-coat system that can be brushed, rolled or sprayed so it is easy to apply and use on maintenance works
- The products are not weather restricted
- They are based on our surface tolerant, universal primers
- When used with MCU-Quickcure they can be over-coated in 45 minutes
- They do not embrittle over time; and
- MCU-Coatings bond tenaciously to good ‘old’ coatings
Our standard tunnel coating specification is 150µm MCU-Zinc primer DFT and 75µm MCU-Miotopcoat DFT.
